These 12 things are vital.

Hands down, there is one question I field the most from members of my team at work and folks I mentor. It might get phrased in different ways, but the spirit of this question lingers on.

What are the essential skills and qualities of effective leaders?

I know that I am JAG (Just Another Guy), but I feel compelled to pass along the twelve things that I believe are vital. If only because I witness so few people in this world honing their abilities in these crucial categories.

Effective leadership in the 21st century demands a versatile blend of expertise and behaviors to navigate the complexities of modern organizations and society. Here is my short but sweet list of essential skills and qualities:

1. Emotional Intelligence:

Leaders need to understand and monitor their feelings effectively, as well as empathize with and relate to the emotions of others. This involves self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management.
